BURLINGTON, Iowa—The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team dropped a nonconference game at Southeastern (Iowa) 102-79 on Tuesday night.
Sophomore guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) had 19 points to lead the Chargers (1-2) in scoring for the third straight game. Sophomore forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) added 14 and freshman guard Vince Gooden (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) totaled 11 points.
Warren Jones scored a game-high 25 for the Blackhawks, who improved to 3-0. Southeastern outrebounded the Chargers 55-28 and shot 40 for 68 from the floor. Sandburg was 27 of 67 from the field but shot 20 for 24 from the free-throw line.
“Right now we just aren’t giving enough effort and focus to the defensive end of the floor,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We need to fix our defensive breakdowns before we can expect to get any better.”
The Chargers will have their home opener at 3 p.m. Saturday against Elgin at John M. Lewis Gymnasium as the back end of a men’s-women’s doubleheader. Sandburg’s women’s team takes on Elgin at 1 p.m.
