DIXON—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team pushed Sauk Valley to the limit but came up short in a 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15 loss Wednesday in the Chargers’ Arrowhead Conference opener.

Sophomore Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) put down a team-leading 26 kills for Sandburg, and sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) had 39 assists. Freshman libero Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) had 27 digs for the Chargers and freshman Rachel Barr (Mendota) added nine kills.

"We had our chances to win the match tonight but let bad calls and our errors end up determining the match,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “I was very pleased with our fight tonight. We didn't just hand them the match when we were down as a team."

The Chargers’ next match is 6 p.m. Sept. 10 against Black Hawk at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in their home opener.
