GALESBURG—Illinois Valley handed the Carl Sandburg College baseball team a pair of close losses in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader Saturday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Eagles won the opener 5-4 in 10 innings and shut out the Chargers 2-0 in Game 2.

The Chargers (17-22-1, 9-8-1) scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to tie Game 1 at 4. It stayed that way until IVCC pushed across the winning run in the 10th against Sandburg reliever Noble Hampton (Forissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central), who struck out four in three innings.

Travis Windsor (Cuba, Ill./Cuba) drove in a pair, and Dean Ballenger (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell Central) also had an RBI for the Chargers.

Brendan Butrimas (Mississauga, Ont./Philip Pocock) took the tough-luck loss in Game 2 after allowing a pair of runs on just four singles in seven innings. Butrimas struck out eight against one walk. Sandburg outhit IVCC 5-4, but the Chargers were held without an extra-base hit.

The Chargers will close their conference schedule when they travel to face IVCC at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
