KEOKUK, Iowa—The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team opened its season with a 54-46 loss at Southeastern (Iowa) on Thursday night.

Freshman forward Marysa Remick led the Chargers (0-1) with nine points, and sophomore guard Makenzie Frank tallied eight points off the bench. Sandburg trailed 24-17 at halftime.

“We played a very nice game for the first time out with 11 first-year players but couldn’t buy a basket for most of the night,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “The kids played hard and got shots we wanted; they just wouldn’t fall.”

Ksenia Sharan, a 6-foot-3 forward from Moscow, and Natalia Merkulova, a 5-9 guard from Moscow, led Southeastern with 14 points apiece.

The Chargers play their home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday against Waubonsee at John Lewis Gymnasium. The Sandburg men’s basketball team will follow with its home opener at 3 p.m. against Wright.
