Chargers in 3-Way Tie for 10th After 1st Round of Nationals

May 21, 2013
SCOTTSBORO, Ala.—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team sits in a three-way tie for 10th place after Tuesday’s first round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Goose Pond Colony.

Making their third appearance at nationals in the last four years, the Chargers shot 302 as a team – their second lowest score of the spring season – and are tied with Tyler (Texas) and Surry (N.C.) in the team standings. South Mountain (Ariz.) leads after posting a 4-under-par 284, and fellow Arrowhead Conference school Black Hawk is in second place, a shot behind South Mountain.

“We might have had some first-round jitters, but it’s good to know we were able to deal with that and still post a pretty good score,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said.

Sophomores Chad Hatch and Cody Reiber each shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Chargers on a hot and humid opening day and are tied for 30th in the individual standings. Freshman Joey Juergens came in at 3 over and is tied for 46th, and sophomore Nick Gustafson shot 81 to enter the second round in a tie for 104th. Sophomore Mark Dockstader’s 83 didn’t count toward the Chargers’ team score.

“Being in the top 10 is a decent position, but I know – and our guys know – they’re capable of playing even better,” Twaddle said. “We were in pretty good shape at the turn, but I think the weather wore them down a bit on the back nine.”

The tournament continues with the second round Tuesday. Sandburg’s opening tee time is 7:45 a.m.
