QUINCY—The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team saw its unbeaten start come to an end with a 58-52 loss at John Wood on Wednesday.
The Chargers (4-1) trailed 31-20 at halftime, and the Blazers (3-4) built their advantage to as many as 16 points in the second half. Sandburg was able to cut its deficit to four with 1 minute, 30 seconds left but got no closer.
Freshman forward Sadee Hamilton (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) scored 10 points and was the only Charger to reach double figures.
“We weren’t ready to play and it cost us tonight,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “I know that is a common excuse, but when your top two scorers fail to score and you have 26 turnovers, I don’t know what else to call it. I give our players credit. They didn’t quit, but we just dug too big a hole to get out of it.”
Sandburg’s next game is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium against second-ranked Illinois Central.
