PORT BYRON—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team posted the top two individual scores at the Duane Chanay Invitational on Friday at Byron Hills Golf Course in Port Byron.

Chargers sophomores Cody Reiber and Nick Gustafson each shot a 1-under-par 70, with Reiber winning a playoff to take medalist honors. Sandburg shot 307 as a team to tie Augustan College’s “B” team for eighth place in the 16-team competition.

Reiber and Gustafson edged Augustana’s Alex Walter and Jake Schneider, Austin Worner and Collin Slattery of Illinois Central College by one shot. Reiber came out strong with a 34 on the front nine, but Gustafson closed with a 33 on the back to force a playoff.

"I’m very proud of Nick and Cody for having the two lowest rounds in the tournament,” Chargers coach K.C. Harding said. “Cody won the playoff to claim medalist, but I am very proud of them both. It’s always nice to see their hard work paying off.”

Sophomore Chad Hatch shot an 80 for Sandburg, and sophomore Mark Dockstader added an 87 for the Chargers’ other score.

Sandburg is back on the course in the two-day Illinois Valley Classic on Friday at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby and Saturday at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Course in LaSalle.
