FREEPORT—Sophomore guard Zach Grover (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) hit seven 3-pointers and scored a season-best 23 points, but the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team lost 76-68 at Highland on Thursday in Arrowhead Conference action.

The Chargers (10-6, 1-1) trailed 36-32 at halftime. Grover led all players in scoring, and freshman guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) added 10 points for Sandburg. Sandburg led by five with 6 minutes to go before the Cougars (9-2, 1-0) rallied for their sixth straight victory.

“We played a great 35 minutes tonight and the last 5 minutes were a little sloppy,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Our effort was there, but we just didn’t hit shots at the end. Highland is a very talented team, and it was great to see our guys scrap and stay with them all game. Zach was on fire tonight and our guys did a great job of making sure he was getting touches every trip.”

Sandburg continues conference play by hosting Sauk Valley at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
