GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College softball players Jordyn Chasteen and Brooke Howard have been named to the all-Region IV District A team for their play this season.
Chasteen, a shortstop from Canton, hit .340 with 23 RBIs and a team-leading 30 runs scored in 47 games during her freshman campaign. She also led the Chargers with 13 doubles and a pair of home runs. Chasteen’s .489 slugging percentage was good for second on the squad, and her .408 on-base percentage was third highest on the team.
Howard, a sophomore pitcher/first baseman from Farmington, led the Chargers with 59 hits, a .401 average and a .497 slugging percentage while also driving in 24 runs. The right-hander also finished with a 14-10 record and a save in 28 appearances in the circle. She threw a team-leading 170 innings, finishing with a 3.01 ERA while striking out 67 and walking 20. Howard tossed four shutouts, and at one point during the season she won seven straight starts.
The pair helped lead Sandburg to a 29-23 overall record and 12-8 mark in Arrowhead Conference play. After getting off to a 7-13 start, the Chargers won 19 of their next 22, which included a nine-game overall winning streak and 11 straight wins in conference play. The hot stretch helped Sandburg reach as high as No. 20 in the NJCAA Division II rankings during the regular season.
