DIXON—Carl Sandburg College cross country members Haley Bolliger and Derek Foley each qualified for the NJCAA Division I national championships at Saturday’s Region IV championship at Sauk Valley Community College.
Bolliger (below, left), a freshman from Tremont, finished fourth in the 5-kilometer women’s race after crossing the finish line in 20 minutes, 5 seconds. She was 58 seconds behind champion Ali Proffitt of College of DuPage. Foley (below, right), a sophomore from Galva, finished the 8-kilometer men’s race in 28:00, placing him 12th overall. Alan Guzman of Morton College won the race in 26:42.
Bolliger and Foley will each compete in the national championships Nov. 10 at Rend Lake College in Ina.
Sandburg finished third as a team in the women’s race, totaling 89 points. College of DuPage won with 43 points, and Morton finished second with 67.
The Chargers’ Sara Pille placed 18th in 21:50, and Lindsay Beach was 20th in 20:58. Freshman Abbie Billeter crossed in 23:03 for 31st place. Other finishers for Sandburg were Amber Schlomer (42nd, 24:22), Tori Briggs (43rd, 24:22) and Sarah Baum (56th, 29:57).
Sandburg totaled 188 points in the men’s race to finish eighth. Morton College won the team title with 47 points. Aside from Foley, other finishers for the Chargers were Jeff Hilgenberg (34th, 30:23), Ryan Crouch (47th, 31:52), Nathan Wooters (52nd, 33:06) and Sean Hatfield (63rd, 53:22).
