MOLINE—The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team couldn’t hold on to a three-point lead at halftime and had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 69-62 loss on Tuesday at Black Hawk in an Arrowhead Conference game.

The Chargers (15-7, 4-2), ranked 21st in this week’s NJCAA Division II poll, led 40-37 at halftime. Sophomore guard Seth Wickert (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) led Sandburg with 17 points and freshman forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) added 11.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well at all tonight. Our last three games we have really struggled to knock down open shots and it caught up to us tonight,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Tonight was the first game we started to get frustrated and force some things, but Black Hawk is very well coached and played good defense tonight.”

Sandburg hosts Arrowhead leader Highland at 3 p.m. Saturday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

“Saturday is now a must-win game for us if we want to have a shot at a conference title,” Twaddle said.
