GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteers for tutoring. Basic volunteer training sessions will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 13, 20 and 27 in Room 103 of George Davis Hall on the campus of Knox College.

Basic training is 16 hours. Twelve hours are completed in class, and the remaining four hours are individual and depend on the interest of the volunteer. Training, tutoring books and materials are free. Food will be provided at all training sessions.

Volunteers may choose to focus on math, learning disabilities, English language learners or specific reading areas, such as phonics or fluency. Once trained, volunteers typically meet for about an hour once a week at a public site and can tutor students one-on-one, in small groups or in classrooms and also assist with specific projects and events.

The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition serves those who are 17 and older, not in public school and function below a ninth-grade level. The coalition is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide and receives funding from the Illinois State Library Literacy Office, the Illinois Community College Board, United Way of Knox County, Dollar General Literacy Foundation and donations from individuals and local organizations.

Registration is required. To register or for more information, contact Karen Avalos, literacy project coordinator, at 309.344.1631 or kavalos@sandburg.edu.
