GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College aims to plant the seed of healthy eating at the Local Foods Fall Festival from 2-7 p.m. Sept. 26 Crist Student Center in Building B on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.
Experienced professionals will be on hand to discuss food nutrition, gardening, growing, local food economics and cooking tips at information booths. Featured experts from University of Illinois Extension, Western Illinois University, Veggies CSA, Jim Stanley Blue Ribbon Farms, Growing Together Inc., Knox College and the Sustainable Business Center will answer visitors’ questions about making healthy changes.
“The Local Foods Fall Festival benefits the community by providing a fun and education resource on the value and importance of locally grown foods,” said Steve Sager, director of business and community education. “Eating is about making choices. We can choose to eat genetically modified foods or foods shipped from 1,500 miles away, or we can choose to eat organically grown local foods where the grower is perhaps your neighbor. When people make the effort to garden and sink their hands into the rich earth, then eat the fruits of their labors, it does something to them. You appreciate where your food comes from and what it takes to grow it.”
Produce will be available for purchase, and local restaurateurs will showcase healthy recipes and provide food samples. Youth from kindergarten through college can take part in pumpkin carving, gourd painting, face painting and a scavenger hunt with prizes, including an HP Slate tablet for first-place winners. Door prizes for adults and children will be done on the hour. The Rootabaga Jammers will play live music from 5:30-7 p.m.
The festival is a partnership between Carl Sandburg College, the Sustainable Business Center, Knox College, the University of Illinois Extension, the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association and local growers that aims to promote green living and sustainability.
