Black Hawk Rallies to Knock Off 14th-ranked Chargers

Feb. 19, 2013
GALESBURG—Black Hawk rallied in the second half to hand the 14th-ranked Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team a 72-64 Arrowhead Conference loss on Sophomore Night on Tuesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (19-10, 6-5), who jumped into the NJCAA Division II top 20 rankings earlier in the day, trailed by as much as 10 in the first half but used a 6-0 run in the final 1:13 to go into the locker room down just 35-31.

Sandburg then scored 10 of the first 14 to open the second half and grab a 43-39 lead. The Chargers led 53-49 with 9 minutes, 40 seconds to go when the Braves used a 13-2 burst over the next 3:50 to go ahead for good and sweep the season series between the teams.

Freshman forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) scored 13 of his team-leading 18 in the first half for the Chargers. Sophomore guard Seth Wickert (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) scored 12 points and freshman guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) added 10.

Heith Beach, who hit six 3-pointers, and Duol Mayot each scored 18 to lead the Braves. Cody Cooley added 11 for Black Hawk.

“We had a major letdown in our effort tonight,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We were careless with the ball, and we missed free throws at critical points in the game. It was just a disappointing effort on our part.”

The Chargers close the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kishwaukee.
