Big Innings Lead Sandburg Softball to Sweep of Lincoln

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader against Lincoln on Wednesday, winning 9-2 and 12-4 at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Chargers (8-12) scored seven unanswered runs after the Lynx tied Game 1 at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Jordyn Chasteen (Canton) delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-run triple in Sandburg’s three-run fourth.

Sophomore Whitney Freeman (Spoon River Valley) earned the victory in the circle, allowing a pair of unearned runs on five hits in seven innings. She struck out five and didn’t issue a walk.

The Chargers went ahead for good in Game 2 thanks to a three-run third to go up 3-2. They then added five runs in the fourth to blow the game open. Sophomore left fielder Hannah Johnson (Illinois Valley Central) drove in three runs to lead Sandburg, and sophomore third baseman Lorren Newingham (Pittsfield) and freshman right fielder Danielle Kenney (Stark County) each had a pair of RBIs for the Chargers.

Freshman Megan Hobson (Limestone) earned the win in exchange for three innings of relief work. She allowed two runs on four hits, struck out two and walked two.
