GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball and women’s golf coach Mike Bailey has been promoted to athletic director following approval Thursday by the College’s Board of Trustees at its regular monthly meeting. Bailey began his new position today.
Bailey has been at Sandburg since 1997, and he will be entering his eighth season as the Chargers’ women’s basketball coach and third as women’s golf coach. He’s also spent the past seven years as the College’s assistant athletic director and coached the men’s basketball team for 10 seasons prior to taking over the women’s program.
“I hope to continue to improve our programs across the board athletically and academically,” Bailey said. “My goal is to keep our athletic department moving forward in a positive way and continue to provide a positive experience for our student-athletes.”
Steve Norton, who served as athletic director for 10 years, will remain in his position as vice president of student services. Norton will assume additional responsibilities for the College following the resignation of Dr. Samuel Sudhakar, vice president of administrative services and CIO, who has accepted a position at California State University San Bernardino.
Sandburg fields 10 intercollegiate athletic teams through the NJCAA and is a member of the Arrowhead Conference. The Chargers qualified for national tournaments in three sports during the 2012-2013 academic year and had two teams that were nationally ranked during their respective seasons. Thirty-seven Sandburg student-athletes earned academic all-conference honors for 2012-2013, and three student-athletes and the women’s basketball team received all-academic honors from the NJCAA.
