GALESBURG—Three recently graduated Carl Sandburg College student-athletes and the Sandburg women’s basketball team have earned honors from the NJCAA for their outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Baseball player Brian Pflum and women’s basketball players Jessica Abel and Makenzie Frank each received the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement for posting a grade point average of 3.60-3.79 on a 4.0 scale. More than 1,600 of the nearly 60,000 NJCAA student-athletes received academic honors, with more than 900 of those meeting the standard for Exemplary Academic Achievement.

“Brian, Jessica and Makenzie were model Sandburg student-athletes,” said Steve Norton, athletic director and vice president of student services. “They gave their best effort on the court or field and in the classroom every day, and I’m extremely proud of each of them.”

Pflum, a sophomore shortstop from Burlington, Iowa; Abel, a sophomore forward from Farmington; and Frank, a sophomore guard from East Galesburg, each graduated in May with an Associate in Science degree. All three also earned academic All-Arrowhead Conference honors earlier this month.

The Chargers women’s basketball team’s 3.07 cumulative GPA made it one of only 48 programs nationwide and six from Illinois to be named a 2012-2013 NJCAA Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team. It’s the third time in the last five years coach Mike Bailey’s team has earned this distinction. Seven of the Chargers’ 13 players also received academic all-conference honors.

“To have more than half of your team — including five freshmen — earn at least a 3.0 GPA is a fantastic accomplishment,” Norton said. “Being an NJCAA All-Academic Team for the third time in five years really shows the kind of character Coach Bailey looks to bring into his program on a consistent basis.”

Teams had to have at least a 3.0 overall team GPA in order to qualify. More than 500 NJCAA programs qualified for academic team accolades for the 2012-2013 academic year out of 3,500 teams in 28 different sports.
