MARION, Iowa—The Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team opened its season with a 19th-place finish at the Mount Mercy Fall Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Hunters Ridge Golf Course


The Chargers shaved 38 shots off their first-round score by shooting 403 as a team in Saturday’s second round. Sandburg finished the tournament with a total of 844. Every player for the Chargers improved their score by at least two strokes in the second round.

GALESBURG—Jesse Bathelt scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute and the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team held on to beat Waubonsee 3-2 on Monday at Kleine Equipment Field.


Bathelt’s unassisted goal was his second of the game and helped the Chargers (2-2-0) pick up their second straight victory. Bathelt won a ball at midfield, beat a couple Waubonsee defenders and drove home a shot in the upper corner for his third goal in the last two games....

GALESBURG—Freshman Jake Kirchoff-Sleet scored twice and had an assist as the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team beat Indian Hills (Iowa) 4-0 on Friday evening at Kleine Equipment Field for the Chargers’ first victory of the season.


“It’s about time we finally had a complete performance,” Sandburg coach Allen Eskridge said. “We’ve had moments of playing to our potential, but tonight was the first time we put it all together.”

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s and women’s cross country season opener scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Western Illinois Early Bird has been canceled because of extreme heat.

The Chargers’ next scheduled event is Bradley Intercollegiate on Sept. 6 at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The women’s race will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s race at 6:15 p.m.

GALESBURG—Despite a pair of second-half goals, the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team lost 3-2 to Knox on Wednesday at Kleine Equipment Field.
