GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women’s cross country team gave coach Rodney Blue a victory in his debut as the Chargers edged Knox in a men’s and women’s dual meet Tuesday evening at Kiwanis Park.

FREEPORT — Carl Sandburg College sophomore men’s golfer Trevor Lay (Kewanee, Ill./Wethersfield) finished fifth individually at the Highland 36 on Friday at Park Hills.

MARION, Iowa — Sophomore Justin Peel (Little York, Ill./United) finished third overall and the Carl Sandburg College women’s golf team made a 24-stroke improvement Sunday during the final round of the Mount Mercy Invite at Hunters Ridge.

Peel posted an 8-over-par 80 for a two-day total of 159 in her first tournament as a Charger. Only Vrishali Sinha (70-144) and Vidushi Sinha (82-158) of Grinnell finished ahead of Peel on the leaderboard.

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball and women’s cross country teams each have been named NJCAA All-Academic Teams for their outstanding performances in the classroom during the 2014-15 academic year.


Teams had to have at least a 3.0 overall grade point average in order to qualify for the award. A total of 591 NJCAA teams qualified for All-Academic recognition out of 3,461 teams in 28 different sports.

GALESBURG — Isaiah Thurmond of Alton High School has signed to play next season for the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team.

Thurmond, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard, averaged 5.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game for the Redbirds as a senior this past season.
