IL Map Grant Est (MAP)

IL MAP Grant EST is a grant provided by the state for Illinois students attending Illinois colleges. The data provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is shared with the state who calculates the student award. Eligibility is based on  financial need, application date, enrollment etc.   IL MAP Grant EST is available for Fall and Spring semesters and students are limited to funds at one college or university each enrollment period.

Pending State Budget

The state requires that institutions announce IL MAP Grant Est Awards, however, funds will not be paid, until paid by the State.  No funding has been provided to date for either 2016-17 or 2017-18.   Please see the Q and A section below for additional clarification.

Payment Calculation

Students must be enrolled for at least 15 credits per semester to receive the full amount of the MAP Grant shown on the award letter.   When enrolled in less than 15 credits the award is prorated as follows:  Award ÷ 15 x credits enrolled.   This award may only be applied to tuition and the registration fee.

MAP Paid Credit Hours

Students are limited to 75 MAP Paid Credit Hours at the community college. The maximum number of MAP Paid Credit Hours that can be received is capped at 135. Students may find their number of MAP paid credit hours by calling 800.899.4722.  Community college students cannot be classified as a Junior or Senior.

State of Illinois Monetary Award Grant Disclosures for 2017-2018

By applying for financial aid and agreeing to share that information with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) you have been considered for the State of Illinois (IL) Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant. All MAP-approved institutions are required by the State of Illinois to announce MAP Grant awards to students who are enrolled or intending to enroll at their institution. An award amount is included on this letter if you have met the eligibility criteria.

The MAP Grant award amount is an estimate made by the financial aid office and is identified as a "State of IL MAP Grant (Est)." Please be aware that the number of available MAP Grants is limited by funding levels approved by the Illinois General Assembly and the Governor, and reductions to estimated or actual MAP Grants are possible.

There are also limitations to how long you can continue to receive a MAP Grant. Usage is tracked by the number of credit hours for which you’ve received MAP benefits and is referred to as MAP Paid Credit Hours (MPCHs). The maximum number of MPCHs that can be received is 135, and you must be at the junior level or above to use more than 75 MPCHs.   For your reference, and to learn more about MPCH limitations, you may access a record of your MPCHs through the ISAC Student Portal at https://studentportal.isac.org/MPCH .

STATE OF ILLINOIS MONETARY AWARD GRANT DISCLOSURES for 2016-2017

By applying for financial aid and agreeing to share that information with the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) you have been considered for the State of Illinois (IL) Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant. If you were determined to meet the eligibility criteria for the MAP grant, an award is included on this award letter. This award may be an estimate made by the financial aid office and, if so, is identified as a "State of IL MAP Grant (Est)". MAP grants are limited based on the number of applicants and funding levels appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly. Please be aware that in light of state funding constraints, reductions to estimated or actual MAP grants are possible. Eligibility for a MAP grant is tracked by the equivalent number of semester credit hours of MAP benefits paid on your behalf. This is called MAP Paid Credit Hours. Payment for each term is being made according to the equivalent number of credit hours eligible for MAP payment, with a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 15 MAP Paid Credit Hours. There is a limit on the number of MAP Paid Credit Hours that can be paid while you are classified by your school as a freshman and sophomore. This limit is the equivalent of 75 MAP Paid Credit Hours. If this maximum is reached, you must attain junior status for your MAP grant eligibility to resume. The maximum number of MAP Paid Credit Hours that can be received is capped at 135. If a State of IL MAP Grant (Est) is not included in your award letter, you are not eligible for the grant at Sandburg.

Q: If I am not receiving IL MAP Grant EST funds, why do I see a MAP award on my financial aid account?
A: Initial calculations show the student is eligible to receive MAP Grant.  If a state budget is approved, the final approved MAP eligibility will be applied to student accounts.

We are here to help with any questions students might have regarding financial aid. Please stop by Financial Aid Office in E103, or call 309.341.5283, or email financialaid@sandburg.edu.

Q: If the state allocates IL MAP Grant EST funding, how will I know?
