Jenks Family Farms Crop Scout Internship 

Location: Western Illinois 

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Field scouting - inspect Jenks Family Farms fields and record the condition of growing crops. Identify and record growth stage, weed, insect and disease infestations and other pertinent information.
  • Report findings and observations to supervisor that effect Jenks Family Farms management decisions.
  • Summer Project (focus will be decided on by supervisor, but will be directed with interns passion in mind)
  • Meet with supervisor regularly to discuss field conditions.
  • Use Drones to record field conditions and pin point crop protection issues. Also use drones to record NDVI

Qualities and background

  • Qualified agronomic knowledge and education (agronomy, weed science, and entomology are well accepted backgrounds for this position)

AgReliant Genetics has opportunities for students and graduates to engage in the seed industry through work internships for the upcoming 2020 summer. 

Our production facility in Elmwood, IL produces, conditions, and ships approximately 500,000 units of corn seed annually. This activity encompasses the facility in Elmwood along with activity in our growing areas that expand out approximately 75 miles from the plant. The intensive nature of seed corn production requires a lot of data collection, scouting, and field activity throughout the growing season. To help assist with this need, we’ve developed a Production Internship program. This program is an excellent introduction to the workings of a seed corn production environment. 

Our Elmwood production facility specifically is expanding our program with multiple internships available for the 2020 year. We are currently accepting applications and conducting interviews for intern positions that can start in the Spring or Summer of 2020. These positions are a great learning experience for either 2-year or 4-year agriculture students with interest in crop production. They are paid internships that can also be used in conjunction with school credit where applicable.

2020 Summer Interns Needed
We provide farmers prescription recommendations for planting and managing their fields. We
follow-up those recommendations with season-long infield ground truthing via our scouting

We conduct on-farm spatial research. We enhance a company’s understanding of new or
existing products by determining how and where they will reach their highest performance

We are seeking field/lab-based interns for the 2020 season. Internships are full-time with the
potential for over-time hours. Interns will be focused on one or both of the following: 1) On-farm
scouting to assess crop conditions and identify potential problems; and/or 2) Contract research
efforts of spatial nature to collect/record in-field data. All interns will gain experience in general
Agronomy, GIS, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Weed Science and data collection and


Agriculture or Science degree track preferred.

  • Willingness and ability to work under on-farm conditions.
  • Understanding of current farming practices is of benefit.
  • GIS experience a plus.
  • Must be task/project driven and able to work independently.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Microsoft Office proficient.
  • Safety oriented.

There is the potential for part-time as early as April and as late as September. The primary
period is May through August. Depending on class schedule could extend into September.
Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive hourly pay commensurate with experience.

2020 Summer Field Research Positions 

The Bayer North America Field Testing Operations (NAFTO) Group in Monmouth, IL is now accepting summer field position applications for our upcoming season running May through August 2020.  We have positions available for college students who would like a rewarding job experience where there will be a variety of agronomic research learning opportunities. Agricultural experience is not required for this role. 

Job tasks could include:

Early season – May and June

  • Assist the group in staking and identifying discard plots at ~25 corn and soybean yield trial locations across Western Illinois
  • Utilize handheld computing devices (ipads, etc.) for in-season data collection at our field locations for corn and soybeans
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of irrigation drip tape for disease trails
  • Collect soil and/or plant samples and installation of soil probes and weather monitoring devices
Mid-season – June, July, and early August
  • Monitoring previous 2019 yield trials for volunteer corn and soybean plants
  • Rouging off type (hybrid) plants in inbred trials
  • Collect plant tissue samples and ship to labs for analysis
  • General plot maintenance and removing weeds in trials
  • Assist in collecting a variety of opportunistic agronomic notes that become present throughout the growing season
  • Assist in collecting flowering data of soybeans
Late season – August
  • Collect plant and corn ear height data from offsite locations
  • Assist with soybean maturity and growth stage notes
