How do I earn my Food Protection Manager Certification?

  • Register for and complete an approved certified Food Protection Manager course. Sandburg uses the National Restaurant ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification, which is in an ANSI-CFP Accredited Program (American National Standards Institute and Conference for Food Protection) ANSI Accreditation website. The course is 8-hours and prepares students for the exam, which is administered and proctored on the class date.
  • Students with an exam score of 75 or better may visit the ServSafe website (www.servsafe.com) to view and print a copy of their certification. (Note: Prior to the class date, students should create an email account in order to correspond and receive their ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certificate. Please bring the email address on your class date to place on the exam. ServSafe certificates are emailed and not forwarded to home addresses. Please speak with the class instructor if you do not have computer, Internet, or printer access.

What is the Certified Food Protection Manager class registration fee?

  • The cost is $145 and includes the examination. You must be pre-registered and made the full payment in advance of the class date. Individuals can pay for their enrollment or businesses may contact us to sponsor an employee's attendance. Cash, credit/debit card, check or money orders are accepted. Cost and conditions are subject to change without notice. Students are responsible for being aware of their Food Protection Manager Certification renewal date. Early registration is encouraged, as classes may fill to capacity in a short amount of time.

When are Food Protection Manager Certification classes?

  • Classes are scheduled once a month on two consecutive Mondays (12 p.m.-4 p.m.) or on a Tuesday (8 a.m.-5 p.m.). Classes are 8-hours in length. Break times are provided and students are dismissed for a lunch break during Tuesday classes. Ms. Alberta LaFollette teaches Monday classes and Ms. Kyle Lloyd leads Tuesday classes.

Where is the Food Protection Manager Certification class held?

  • Sandburg's Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) Building, 2051 Tom L. Wilson Blvd., Galesburg. Outside signage will be posted directing individuals to the Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) parking lot.

What if I am unable to attend class due to illness or a family emergency?

  • We understand that emergencies may arise. Individuals can reschedule one-time if Corporate & Leisure College staff are notified before the class start time. Students should call 309.345.3501 and leave a message stating their full name, phone number, and absence. Refunds will not be issued for classes dropped after the class start time. Missing a class may move you beyond your required certification renewal date.

Will I receive a reminder call or email prior to the class date?

  • Yes. One or two days before your class, you will receive a call and/or email reminder. After enrolling in the class, please phone with any changes to your email address or phone number. The College staff is not responsible for any missed reminder messages. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of the class date and start time.

What do I need bring on the day of class?

  • A photo ID and ink pen or pencil. You may also wish to bring paper to take notes during class. An email address to add on your exam form in order to correspond with ServSafe regarding your certification.
  • Beverages are permitted, as long as they are in a cup or bottle with a lid. The Center for Manufacturing Excellence does have a snack vending machine and a soda machine with six drink varieties. Coffee is available at the Cyber Cafe, Student Center - B Building.

Is there a class textbook?

  • No. However, you will receive study guides at your time of registration. The study guides do not include all the exam questions you will see. The study guides are good resources and should be brought to your class for review purposes.

What if I do not pass the exam?

  • A score of 75 or better is required to pass the Food Protection Manager Certification multiple-choice exam. For a fee, a student may take the exam twice within a thirty-day period. If a third attempt is required, the student must wait at least sixty days from their last attempt. An exam may only be taken four times within a year. Students may register in the course as many times as they wish. Every course registration is $145. Please call for further information and registration.

What additional information should I know?

  • Please dress in layers as the classroom temperature can fluctuate. Smoking (including e-cigarettes) and tobacco are prohibited on all campus grounds (including inside vehicles).

*On rare occasions, a class may be cancelled due to low enrollment numbers. It is recommended students enroll early to complete the program in advance of their Certified Food Protection Manager renewal date. Students should check with their county health department regarding regulations. All counties and states may have varying policies.
