Food for Thought - Lunch Club

Join us for a tour of Galesburg’s G&M Distributors, Inc. on Linwood Road. A tour of the warehouse will be provided and an overview of the distribution process. Learn more about the history of G&M located in Galesburg since 1946. Afterwards, we will meet at Pizza Hut on Fremont Street to enjoy pizza and Pepsi products. Any additional food items will be at your own cost.

Educational Day Trips:

Dyersville, Iowa
We will begin this educational day trip with a visit to the Dyer-Botsford Doll Museum. Home to the founder of Dyersville, this restored Victorian home has a collection of over 2,000 dolls and features a rare revolving German Feather Christmas tree with antique ornaments. Afterwards, we will travel to the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier. The Basilica is one of 77 in the United States and the only one in a rural community. At 1 p.m. we will eat a home cooked style lunch at Country Junction restaurant. Save room for a slice of pie! It’s then time to get ready for the Major League Baseball season with a visit to the Field of Dreams Movie Site. See the baseball field featured in the famous 1989 movie and join the estimated 65,000 people who travel to the site every year, according to the Field of Dreams website. From there, we will travel to Becker Woodcarving Museum to view the woodworking of the famed Northeast Iowa carver, Jack Becker, in one of Iowa’s most unique carving museums. Top off the day with ice cream at Dairy Queen. Cost includes transportation and entrance to attractions. Please wear comfortable walking shoes with good tread. No open-toed shoes. Morton/Washington, Illinois
We will begin the day with a stop at The Cookery in Morton, Illinois. Join Chef Amanda Pyle and assist her with making a delicious dish or two. This two-hour course is taught in The Cookery kitchen. Participants may sit or stand as the food is prepared. At the end, we will sit down together and eat our tasty creations. Following lunch we take a quick trip over to Washington, Illinois. You will have a chance to walk where Abraham Lincoln walked. Bronze footprints have been placed to mark the places he visited. It is a foodie's delight as we will also make stops in Lori's Kitchen Store, Holland's Mercantile with 150 jars of candy, and Holland's Carmel-corn featuring 23 varieties of popcorn. Bloomington, Illinois
Celebrate Earth Day, April 22, with a trip to the Bloomington, Illinois area. We will depart from Sandburg’s Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME) building at 8am. Our first stop will be a brief visit to the Cruisin’ with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center. Afterwards, we will make our way to Twin Grove Wind Farm for a one-hour tour. You will learn about the farm’s energy output and benefits to the community, as well as, the technology behind the robust machines designed to capture the kinetic energy of the wind and convert it into electricity. We will then head to CJ’s Family Restaurant for lunch. CJ’s menu includes soups, salads, sandwiches, pizza and more. Succeeding lunch, we will travel to Funks Grove Pure Maple Sirup for a tour and discover how the sirup is processed. Plus, you will learn why the Funk family does not spell ‘sirup’ with a ‘y.’ We will also take a tour of the Funk Prairie Home, built in 1864, featuring magnificent furniture and décor of the 1800’s. On the same site of the Prairie Home is also the Funk Gem & Mineral Museum. LaFayette Funk II’s collection is the largest one-man gem and mineral collection in the world. Hannibal, Missouri
Spend the day in Hannibal, Missouri! Our first stop will be a visit to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum Properties. Each individual will receive a giveaway bag containing information about the area and valuable coupons. We will eat lunch at Mark Twain's Dinette, established in 1942. Following lunch, we will take a brief look in the shops and a self-guided tour of the Hannibal History Museum. We will then travel to the Rockcliffe Mansion for a tour. The mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built between 1898 & 1900 and features more than 30 rooms, 10 ornate fireplaces and beautiful architectural details. Cost includes transportation and entrance to attractions. Lunch and shopping expenses are at your own cost. Space is limited, minimum of 10. Registration required by Tuesday, May 9. Donahue/Davenport, Iowa
Join us for a fun day! This educational day trip will include a visit to Miss Effie's Country Flowers & Garden, in Donahue, for a tour. You have the option of picking your own beautiful flowers for a fee. Afterwards, we will travel to the Palmer College Mansion for a tour of the mansion's first floor with 20 rooms to view. Lunch will be at the Barrel House restaurant in Davenport. The Barrel House menu features great items from gourmet burgers to sandwiches and specialty salads. Succeeding lunch, we will receive a guided tour of the Harborview Production Studio to see how Isabel Bloom sculptures are created. New designs will be showcased, and all will have an opportunity to share their ideas for future sculptures. We will stop for a sweet snack before leaving Davenport. Lunch and shopping expenses are at your own cost. Space is limited, minimum of 10. Registration required by Wednesday, June 7. No cancellation past 6/7/17; however, a substitute can attend.
