Please note: The Tutoring Center will be closed on Fridays starting this semester, Spring 2016.
The Carl Sandburg College Tutoring Program is a fantastic, free resource for all Carl Sandburg College students. Through tutoring, our goal is to provide friendly, accessible academic assistance in all subject areas. Students on the Galesburg campus interested in any of the resources listed below should visit the Tutoring Center in room B72 for more information. Students in Carthage, online students, and dual credit students who are interested in tutoring options should see our section on Distance Tutoring.
Learn more about:
The Tutoring Center, located in B72 on the galesburg campus, is the place to go for help with all your core classes, from math and science to writing, Spanish, and general study skills. Tutoring is available primarily on a walk-in basis, though students can call ahead to schedule an appointment.
Tutoring sessions are casual interactions that are student-initiated, student-centered, and student-driven. Students get the most out of the Tutoring Center’s services when they come well before an assignment is due and prepared to work. Students often come for clarification, extra practice, brainstorming and planning, or guidance on their homework. Tutoring is not a homework correction service; rather it should be seen as an educational opportunity, additional instruction that enables students to work on their own with more confidence.
What do we tutor?
Students should feel comfortable coming to the Tutoring Center for help with all kinds of subjects, including (but not limited to):
Please check in with the tutors to see what subjects are available at what times. Tutoring emphases and scheduling varies from semester to semester.
Tutoring is available for many Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, such as computer information systems and nursing. CTE tutoring is arranged by semester and by department, sometimes scheduled around class meeting times. If you want to know more about tutoring in a particular CTE subject, please contact Jake Runge, Coordinator of Academic Support, at 309.341.5262.
Students have access to tutoring any day, any time with Brainfuse. If you have internet access and a Carl Sandburg College student email account, you can take advantage of this resource.
Online tutoring is free, one-on-one, real-time tutoring via your computer, tablet, or smart phone. Brainfuse records your documents and tutoring sessions, so they are easily accessible as study notes later, or sent to your instructor. Best of all, it’s a tutoring service that conforms to your schedule—even if that means you’re getting tutored at 3 AM! Brainfuse also offers skill building exercises, video tutorials, practice tests, and much more.
Head over to your mySandburg page to get started. Click on the Brainfuse link to be automatically logged in from your mySandburg page or, if your instructor has enabled it, your Moodle course page.
If you are attending the Carthage campus, attending online, or are a dual credit student, you still have tutoring options available to you. In addition to Brainfuse online tutoring, Skype sessions with tutors at the Galesburg campus's Tutoring Center are available by arrangement. If you are interested, you should contact the Coordinator of Academic Support Services.
Students attending the Carthage campus and online or dual credit students in the Bushnell area may also arrange for a face-to-face tutor in their area, pending availability. Interested students should contact their local Sandburg representative.
