The Carl Sandburg College Tutoring Program is a fantastic, free resource for all Carl Sandburg College students. Through tutoring, our goal is to provide friendly, accessible academic assistance in all subject areas. Students interested in any of the resources listed below should visit the Tutoring Center in room B72 for more information.
The Tutoring Center
What is it?
The Tutoring Center, located in B72, is the place to go for help with all your core classes, from math and science to writing, Spanish, and general study skills. Tutoring is available primarily on a walk-in basis, though students can call ahead to schedule an appointment.
Tutoring sessions are casual interactions that are student-initiated, student-centered, and student-driven. Students get the most out of the Tutoring Center’s services when they come prepared to work and well before an assignment is due. Students often come for clarification, extra practice, brainstorming and planning, or guidance on their homework. Tutoring is not a homework correction service; rather it should be seen as an educational opportunity, additional instruction that enables students to work on their own with more confidence.
What do we tutor?
Students should feel comfortable coming to the Tutoring Center for help with all kinds of subjects, including (but not limited to):
Please check in with the tutors to see what subjects are available at what times. Tutoring emphases and scheduling varies from semester to semester.
Tutoring is available for many Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, such as computer information systems and nursing. CTE tutoring is arranged by semester and by department, sometimes scheduled around class meeting times. If you want to know more about tutoring in a particular CTE subject, please contact Jake Runge, Coordinator of Academic Support, at 309.341.5262.
Students have access to tutoring any day, any time with Tutor.com. If you have internet access and a Carl Sandburg College student email account, you can take advantage of this resource.
Online tutoring is free, one-on-one, real-time tutoring via your computer, tablet, or smart phone. Tutor.com records your documents and tutoring sessions, so they are easily accessible as study notes later. Best of all, it’s a tutoring service that conforms to your schedule—even if that means you’re getting tutored at 3 AM!
Head over to tutor.com/sandburg to get started. Log in with your Carl Sandburg College email address, and you will be prompted to set up a free account from there.
Intensive tutoring is a highly-structured option for students who wish for longer-term, dedicated assistance with a certain class. Intensive tutoring may be one-on-one or small-group, based on the number of qualifying applicants and their needs; sessions may be held up to two times per week. Intensive tutoring is provided on an as-available, as-needed basis.
In order to qualify for intensive tutoring, students must be recommended by their instructor. Only students in greater academic need (i.e. students who are receiving a D or F in the course for which they are applying for intensive tutoring) who have already tried other tutoring options will be considered.
