GALESBURG—Freshmen Zach Zwenger and Jon Kupfert each tossed complete games as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team swept a nonconference doubleheader against Spoon River on Wednesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
Zwenger gave up five hits and struck out eight in the Chargers’ 11-3 victory in the opener while Kupfert scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked none in a 6-1 Sandburg win in Game 2.
A five-run third inning gave the Chargers (7-8) a 6-1 lead in Game 1. Third baseman Andrew Sprenke and first baseman Blake Durflinger each went 2 for 4 with a run and two driven in to lead a 12-hit Sandburg attack that saw eight starters pick up at least one hit.
The Chargers stormed to a 5-0 lead after the first inning of Game 2. Kupfert cruised from there, with his only blemish being a leadoff home run in the fifth. Durflinger, outfielder Billy King, catcher Michael Harp and outfielder Connor Shaw each drove in a run for the Chargers.
Sandburg plays a nine-inning game at Augustana JV at 7 p.m. Thursday before returning home for an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader against Kishwaukee at noon Saturday.
