MACOMB—The Carl Sandburg College cross country teams opened their season Friday at the Western Illinois Early Bird.
Freshman Haley Bolliger paced the Chargers in the 4-kilometer women’s race with a 13th-place time of 17 minutes, 20 seconds. Teammate Sara Pille finished 16th in 17:20 and Lindsay Beach came across in 18:20, good for 22nd. Other finishers for the Chargers were Tori Braggs (30th, 19:47), Amber Schlomer (31st, 20:04) and Abbie Billeter (32nd, 20:06).
Sandburg, the only community college to field a full team in the women’s race, finished fifth with 97 points. Iowa won the title with 21 points.
Sandburg sophomore Derek Foley took finished the 6-kilometer men’s race in 20:55. His 28th-place finish was the best of any runner in the field from a community college. Freshman Jeff Hilgenberg took 56th in 23:09, and sophomore Nathan Wooters place 66th in 26:45.
The Chargers didn’t field a full team for the race. Iowa swept the top three spots and won the team title with 18 points.
Sandburg returns to action Friday in the Spartan XC Classic at Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora. The women’s race is scheduled for 5 p.m., with the men’s race set for 5:45 p.m.
