GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team lost to Illinois Valley 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 in Arrowhead Conference action on Wednesday at John Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (5-5, 1-3) took the opening set after winning the final three points, capped by a block from freshman middle hitter Caitlin McVay. But IVCC jumped to an early double-digit lead in the second set, pulled away in the third after the teams were tied at 17-17 and never looked back following a 7-0 run in the fourth to go up 20-12.
Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey had team highs of 16 kills and five blocks for Sandburg. Sophomore libero Dani Lessard racked up 28 digs and a pair of aces, and freshman setter Lexa Mahr, playing on a sore ankle, led the Chargers with 37 assists.
“We gave a good effort tonight but we’re just really banged up right now,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “Our biggest thing is that we need to get healthy.”
The Chargers’ next match is an Arrowhead contest at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hawk.
