GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team lost to Sauk Valley 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 25-10 in Arrowhead Conference action Tuesday evening at John Lewis Gymnasium.
Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey and freshman middle hitter Caitlin McVay led the Chargers (1-3, 0-2) offensively with 10 kills apiece. Sophomore outside hitter Mercedes Sazone added nine kills and eight digs while freshman outside hitter Courtney Learned had eight kills and 10 digs. Freshman setter Lexa Mahr had team highs of 33 assists and four blocks for Sandburg.
The Chargers used an 8-1 spurt in the second set to go ahead 23-16 and tie the match at a set apiece. The Skyhawks took control of the third set by scoring nine of 10 for a 19-9 advantage and were never threatened in the fourth after a 7-0 run put them up 13-5.
“There’s no excuse for the way we played tonight,” Chargers coach Todd Winkler said. “There’s no reason for why we played so poorly. We got what we deserved.”
Sandburg hits the road for another Arrowhead match at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Black Hawk East.
