GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team’s pitching staff tossed 18 scoreless innings as the Chargers swept an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader with Highland on Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. Sandburg (13-13, 5-5) won the opener 2-0 and took the nightcap 1-0 in 11 innings to even its overall and conference records.
Starter Brendan Butrimas tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Chargers in the opener. The freshman right-hander struck out five, allowed five hits and walked three before giving way to Ted Moreland, who earned the save in exchange for recording the game's final out.
Sandburg scored the game's only runs in the first inning on a single by Andrew Sprenke and a sacrifice fly by Josh Swank. Sprenke and Brett Martinez each had two of the Chargers' six hits.
Michael Harp drove in the winning run in Game 2 with a one-out single in the 11th to plate Josh Wade. Wade led off the frame with a base hit and moved to second on Billy King’s sacrifice bunt.
Brad Moody picked up the win on the mound after throwing the final 4 1/3 innings in relief while striking out six, walking two and allowing two hits. Starter Kyle Mesecher went the first 6 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts against seven hits and three walks.
The Chargers have another Arrowhead doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kishwaukee.
