Sandburg Tops DuPage 4-3 to Advance to Region IV Semifinals

Oct. 26, 2013
GLEN ELLYN—The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team continued its run through the Region IV tournament with a 4-3 quarterfinal victory over DuPage on Saturday.

The Chargers (15-4-0), who have won three games in the tournament and nine of their last 10 overall, advance to play at Oakton in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Waubsonsee will host Morton in the other semifinal, also at 3 p.m. Saturday. The championship is set for noon Nov. 2.

Sandburg held on against the Chaparrals after jumping to an early 3-0 lead and a 4-1 halftime advantage. Freshman Lawson Crider opened the scoring in the 14th minute after finishing a cross from freshman Carlos Viganoni. Crider added his second goal following a free kick in the 18th minute to give Sandburg a 2-0 lead, and he fed freshman Jake Kirchoff-Sleet for a 3-0 advantage less than 2 minutes later.

After DuPage got on the board in the 28th minute, Viganoni found freshman Nitram Senderos in the 36th minute, and the Chargers went into halftime with a commanding 4-1 lead. The Chaparrals scored in the 73rd and 85th minutes to cut Sandburg’s lead to one, but freshman goalkeeper Jake Hannam made a save and sophomore Francis Fiemawhle made a key block in the final minutes to preserve the victory for the Chargers.

“We played really, really well in the first half. We were a little sluggish after halftime, but we did just enough to hang on,” Sandburg interim coach Kokou Kaho said. “This team has a chance to do something really special, and they’re making the most of that opportunity right now.”
