GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team earned its first victory of the season with a 4-1 win over Eureka College on Wednesday night at Kleine Equipment Field.
The Chargers (1-1) struck first in the second minute on a long shot by sophomore Mario Romero that found the top right corner of the goal. Sandburg took a 2-0 lead into halftime when freshman Chino Ayala took a pass from freshman Matt Connors and put in a low shot near the left post in the 19th minute.
The Chargers opened up a 3-0 lead in the 76th minute after sophomore Kevin Aka made a nifty stop-and-start move and fired a hard shot into the right side of the net. Ayala then found sophomore Gustavo Sarmiento in the 81st minute to give Sandburg a 4-0 advantage.
Sandburg freshman goalkeeper Collin Jeffcoat made nine saves but saw his shutout bid come to an end when Eureka's Erik Harm scored with 1:31 to play. The Chargers outshot the Red Devils 11-9 and had six corner kicks to Eureka’s four.
Sandburg plays its first road match of the season when it faces McHenry County College at noon Saturday in Crystal Lake.
