PLYMOUTH, Ind.—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team posted its best score of the week and finished in 17th place Friday during the final round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Swan Lake Resort.

“It was nice to see this team to go out on a good note,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “They had nothing to lose today, and they went out and played like it. We played our best round of the week by far.”

The Chargers totaled a 319 to best their previous top score for the tournament by six shots and were led by sophomore Joey Juergens (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg), who carded a 4-over-par 76 and finished a team-best 320 for the week in his second straight appearance at nationals. Freshman Ryan Ballard (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) delivered a 79 for his best score of the week.

Freshman Austin McDougall III (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) came in with an 81, and freshman Dylan Mullins (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) shot an 83 to round out Sandburg’s scoring. Freshman Bryer Anderson (Elmwood, Ill./Farmington) posted a 94 that didn’t count toward the Chargers’ team total.

Sandburg entered the round three shots behind Independence (Kan.) for 16th place, but the Pirates posted a 317 on Friday to hold off the Chargers. Southern Maryland finished 18th, 15 shots behind Sandburg.

Four freshmen — Ballard, McDougall, Mullins and Anderson — will return for the Chargers next fall as they look to make their third straight appearance at nationals and fifth in the past six seasons.

“This week was a really good learning experience for our freshmen, and I’m sure they’ll use it as motivation to try to get back here next season and do even better,” Twaddle said. “Joey is our only sophomore, but he’s meant a lot to our program the last two years, especially this season. It’s going to be difficult to replace the type of talent and experience he brought to our team.”

Walters (Tenn.) State shot 308 as a team to complete a wire-to-wire victory for the national championship. The Senators finished at 1,189 for the tournament and beat Mesa (Ariz.) by 11 shots. Arrowhead Conference rival Black Hawk finished fourth with a total of 1,218.

Levi Fink of North Iowa Area shot 2 under in the final round and finished 1 under for the tournament to win the individual national title by two shots over Charlie Cameron of Tyler (Texas) and Tanner McKinney of Mineral (Mo.) Area. Fink entered the final round in third, three shots back of McKinney.
