GALESBURG—The registration deadline is March 25 for the 20th annual Knox-Galesburg Symphony Young Pianists Competition. The competition will take place at 9 a.m. April 6 in Building F on Carl Sandburg College’s Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.
There is no cost to enter the competition, which is open to pianists who are 5 to 14 years old as of April 6 and live in Knox, Henry or Warren counties. Participants will compete in one of three age categories.
This year’s judges for the event will be Dr. Bruce Polay, artistic director/conductor of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony and professor of music and department chair at Knox College, and Megan Clewell, instructor of piano and staff accompanist at Knox College. Participants receive written feedback from the judges, a feature introduced at last year’s competition.
Winners will be invited to perform onstage April 27 at the Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg as part of the Music Mornings Program. The Knox-Galesburg Symphony will also host a public recital for all winners and honorable mentions at 3 p.m. May 5 in Knox College’s Kresge Recital Hall.
Participants and their siblings will receive a free ticket to the Knox-Galesburg Symphony’s performance April 27, featuring acclaimed pianist Roberta Rust. Other immediate family members will receive a 20 percent discount on additional tickets to the concert.
