GALESBURG—The 20th-ranked Carl Sandburg College softball team extended its winning streak to nine games with a pair of 4-3 victories over Black Hawk on Wednesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Chargers (26-16, 12-4), who jumped into the NJCAA Division II rankings earlier in the day, scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning of each game to maintain their lead atop the Arrowhead Conference standings. Sandburg has won 16 of its last 17, is 19-3 in April and has won 10 straight Arrowhead contests.
After the Braves tied Game 1 at 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth, Brooke Howard delivered the game-winner with a double to left in the bottom of the frame and retired Black Hawk in order in the seventh to pick up the complete-game victory. The sophomore right-hander allowed 10 hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
Black Hawk jumped to a 3-0 lead after its half of the third in Game 2, but the Chargers rallied with four unanswered runs to win it. Sandburg got on the board with Lindsay Lippert’s RBI double in the third and tied it on Howard’s two-run double off the left-field fence in the fifth.
Erika Hulvey opened the Chargers’ sixth-inning rally by reaching on an error, moved up on a Lippert single and scored from second on Kaylee Moseley’s two-out hit to left.
Howard earned another complete-game victory after allowing just three hits. She struck out three didn’t walk anyone and was able to work around five Chargers errors.
“It was like déjà vu,” Howard said of the two games. “We just knew we couldn’t lose and did what we had to do to win.”
Sandburg hosts Sauk Valley at 3 p.m. Thursday in another Arrowhead doubleheader. The Chargers, who control their own destiny in the league race, close the conference schedule with a twinbill at noon Sunday at Highland.
