PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Carl Sandburg College softball team knocked out 18 hits and defeated Florissant Valley (Mo.) 8-2 on Sunday during its Spring Break trip for its first win of the season.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings, the Chargers went ahead with two runs in the fifth, then scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh. Freshman Hannah Johnson (Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central) reached base in all four plate appearances, going 2 for 2 with two walks, a double, a triple and three RBIs. Freshman Lexa Mahr (Macomb) added three singles for Sandburg.
Sophomore pitcher Grace Cleair (ROWVA) settled in after allowing a run in each of the first two innings. She struck out six, walked six and allowed six hits in the complete-game victory.
Florrisant Valley scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of Game 2 to beat the Chargers 7-5. Sophomore Brooke Howard (Farmington) took the loss after allowing seven runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Freshman Ally Cordle (Abingdon) had a pair of RBIs for Sandburg (1-2), and Johnson went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
The Chargers continue their trip with a pair of games today against Lewis and Clark, starting at 1 p.m.
