MADISON, Wis.—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team had plenty of offensive production but was swept in a doubleheader Sunday at Madison (Wis.) Area Tech, losing 8-6 and 9-11.
Eighth- and ninth-place hitters Lucas Giertz and Brett Martinez each drove in a pair in the opener to lead the Chargers (11-13), who led 6-3 after their half of the third before surrendering five unanswered runs. Starter Zach Zwenger allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in five innings to take the loss.
Sandburg led 8-7 in Game 2 before Madison Area Tech scored four runs in the sixth and held on for the win. The Chargers loaded the bases with two out in the seventh before Josh Swank, who had two hits and three RBIs, struck out to end the contest.
Travis Windsor and Brian Pflum each had two hits and three runs scored for the Chargers. Pflum also drove in two runs as part of a 16-hit Sandburg attack.
Madison Area Tech’s sixth-inning damage came against reliever Blake Durflinger, who took the loss in his only frame of work. He surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk.
The Chargers host Highland in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
