GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College softball team extended its winning streak to five games by sweeping a nonconference doubleheader with Spoon River on Saturday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers routed Spoon River 16-0 in the opener and won Game 2 3-2 in eight innings.
Lindsay Lippert opened the eighth-inning rally by reaching on catcher’s interference and moved up to third before Kaylee Moseley delivered a walk-off single for her second RBI of the game. Down 2-1 in the sixth, the Chargers (22-16) tied it when Jordyn Chasteen walked, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out error.
Sandburg’s rally gave the victory to Grace Cleair, who struck out 11 and gave up two runs on five hits and five walks while winning her eighth straight decision.
Already up 6-0 in the opener, the Chargers made it a blowout with a 10-run fourth inning. Lippert drove in a team-leading four runs, Augusta Chandler added three RBIs and Shannon Kasap, Brooke Howard and Corinne Heins each knocked in a pair for Sandburg, which banged out 15 hits.
Howard and freshman Haily Huizenga combined for a two-hit shutout in the five-inning contest. Howard gave up a pair of singles and struck out one in four innings for her fifth straight victory. Huizenga struck out one and walked one in a scoreless fifth.
