GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team picked up its first home victories of the season Thursday, sweeping North Arkansas 8-2 and 13-8 at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Chargers (6-6) won the opener behind three RBIs from sophomore Ryan Wendt (Red Bud, Ill./Red Bud) and a strong effort on the mound from sophomore starter Brad Moody (Chatsworth, Ill./Prairie Central).
Moody didn’t allow an earned run in six innings while striking out eight and walking one en route to the picking up the victory.
Trailing 2-1 in the third inning of Game 1, the Chargers tied it when freshman Dean Ballenger (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell Central) tripled in a run. Sandburg took the lead for good one batter later when a North Arkansas error on Moody’s grounder to second plated a pair of runs. The Chargers added two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.
Sandburg took a 6-4 lead in the third inning of Game 2 with a two-run home run from freshman Noble Hampton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) to cap a four-run frame.
Ballenger added a solo blast to left in the Chargers’ four-run fourth. Wendt went 3 for 4 with three runs as the Chargers knocked out 10 base hits in Game 2.
Sophomore right-hander Jon Kupfert (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) went the distance to pick up the victory. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three and not issuing a walk.
