GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader with Kishwaukee on Sunday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers took the opener 12-2 in six innings before losing Game 2 14-2 in five innings.
Sandburg (13-16, 6-4) opened the scoring in Game 1 with an eight-run fourth inning, then added two runs in both the fifth and sixth. Sophomore first baseman Josh Ellsworth went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs for the Chargers, while Brett Martinez, Eddy Largy and Mark Zhorne each had two RBIs.
Sophomore right-hander Zak Engelbrecht allowed two runs on four hits in the complete-game victory. He struck out five and walked three.
Sandburg was held to three hits in Game 2 as Kishwaukee scored at least two runs in each inning. Chargers sophomore Tanner Hiett allowed nine runs on 11 hits in three innings to take the loss. Ellsworth and freshman Josh Swank each drove in a run for Sandburg.
Sandburg faces Kishwaukee again at 2 p.m. Tuesday in a doubleheader at Malta.
