SOUTH HOLLAND—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team opened its season with a 3-3 showing Thursday through Saturday at the South Suburban Invite. After dropping their first two matches, the Chargers (3-3) won three of their final four contests.
Sandburg picked up its first victory Friday with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 sweep of Prairie State and followed that up with a 25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 16-14 win over Ancilla (Ind.).
The Chargers were swept 26-24, 25-13, 25-14 by Des Moines (Iowa) Area to open Saturday’s play but rebounded to beat the host Bulldogs 25-21, 25-23, 26-24 in the final match of the tournament. Sophomore outside hitter Erika Hibberd (Pekin) and sophomore middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) paced the Chargers with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, against South Suburban. Sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) had a team-high 23 assists to go with seven kills, and freshman Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) led Sandburg defensively with 17 digs.
The Chargers opened their season Thursday with a 25-20, 25-27, 25-14, 25-15 loss to Indian Hills (Iowa) and a 25-16, 28-26, 25-13 loss to Moraine Valley.
“We had a good weekend, and the team is starting to put things together and play fast-paced volleyball,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said.
The Chargers’ next match is their home opener at 6 p.m. Thursday against Lincoln at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
