ROCHESTER—The Carl Sandburg College softball team picked up a pair of five-inning shutout victories Monday at Robert Morris, winning 8-0 and 12-0 in a nonconference doubleheader.
Up 2-0 after two innings in Game 1, the Chargers (9-13) opened things up with a four-run third. Freshman outfielder Hannah Johnson (Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central) went 2 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and three RBIs to lead Sandburg’s offense. Sophomore pitcher Brooke Howard (Farmington) went 3 for 4 with two doubles in addition to striking out two and not walking a batter in a four-hit shutout.
Sophomore outfielder Shannon Kasap (LaSalle-Peru), sophomore outfielder Lindsay Lippert (LaSalle-Peru) and freshman second baseman Ally Cordle (Abingdon) each added a pair of hits for Sandburg.
The Chargers knocked out 16 hits — five for extra bases — in Game 2 and scored six times in the second to go ahead 7-0. Freshman catcher Kaylee Moseley (Rockridge) finished 3 for 3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and three driven in for Sandburg, and Howard had a pair of hits and three RBIs. Johnson had a pair of hits and two runs driven in, while Cordle and Lippert each picked up three hits, scored twice and added an RBI.
Freshman Whitney Freeman (Spoon River Valley) allowed two hits in two innings to pick up the victory in the circle. Freshman Haley Huizenga (Erie) followed with two innings in relief, and sophomore Grace Cleair tossed a scoreless fifth to close out the victory.
The Chargers are back in action with an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader against Illinois Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
