GRAYSLAKE—Sophomore forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) scored a game-high 23 points and the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team drained 10 3-pointers as the Chargers won 80-73 at Lake County in the quarterfinals of the Region IV tournament Thursday night.
The Chargers (16-14) snapped a four-game skid while advancing to the semifinals to play top-seeded Kishwaukee at noon Sunday at Illinois Valley.
Sandburg jumped to a 14-5 lead just more than 4 minutes into the contest and had a 41-30 advantage at halftime. Lake County scored 10 of the first 12 to open the second half, but the Chargers were able to keep the Lancers from taking the lead.
Freshman guard Vince Gooden (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) hit four 3s and added 19 points, and sophomore forward Matt Sagona (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville) finished with 10 points for the Chargers.
“We came out with some great energy tonight,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We played smart basketball, made great passes and made good decisions with the ball. They made a run, but we were able to hit enough shots down the stretch.”
Jerry Gaylor led the Lancers with 17 points.
