GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team dropped its home opener with a 70-68 loss to Elgin on Saturday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (1-3) had a 33-30 halftime lead but saw the Spartans battle back. Sandburg had a chance to tie or win the game with 6.2 seconds left, but sophomore guard Zach Ziemba (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) had his shot attempt blocked in the closing seconds.
Sophomore forward Aaron Power (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) led the Chargers with 17 points. Sophomore forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) added 15 and sophomore guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) scored 14.
“We played hard for a good 25 minutes, but we weren’t able to finish the game,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We have been a poor rebounding team so far, and it caught up to us as we lost on an offensive rebound and putback.”
The Chargers will play in the Waubonsee Classic on Friday and Saturday in Sugar Grove. Sandburg faces host Waubonsee at 7 p.m. Friday before taking on Oakton at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Chargers’ next home game is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 against St. Ambrose JV.
