GALESBURG—Freshman guard Vince Gooden (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) hit six 3-pointers and scored a team-high 24 points as the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball routed Eureka JV 102-67 on Thursday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium for the Chargers’ eighth straight win.
Gooden hit three 3s in each half and came two points away from matching his season high, which came Nov. 23 against Lincoln Land. The Chargers (9-3) scored their most points in a game this season and the 35-point margin of victory was their largest of the year.
The game was never in doubt after Sandburg used a 15-0 run to go up 28-8 midway through the first half, and the Chargers led 51-18 at halftime. Sandburg hit nine 3s as a team and shot 11 for 11 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) scored 14 points, sophomore forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) scored 13 and freshman guard Reggie Anderson (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur) came off the bench to score 10 points for the Chargers.
“Overall, it was a good night for us,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Vince shot the ball really well, and we had a lot of guys come off the bench and give us good minutes. We set the tone early with our defense.”
Brody Rothrock hit nine 3s and scored a game-high 35 for the Red Devils (0-4). Shawn Duffield, a Spoon River Valley graduate, added 13 points for Eureka.
The Chargers are back at home at 5 p.m. Saturday against Triton for the latter contest in a men’s/women’s doubleheader. Sandburg’s women’s team will face John Wood at 3 p.m. in the opening game.
