Chargers in 12th at Nationals, Poised for School-Best Finish

May 23, 2013
SCOTTSBORO, Ala.—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team is alone in 12th place after Thursday’s third round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Goose Pond Colony and is in position to post the program’s best finish ever at nationals.

The Chargers shot 312 as a team Thursday and have a three-day total of 918. Sandburg is two shots ahead of 13th-place Allegany (Md.) and 12 shots behind Murray State (Okla.) for 11th. Kirkwood (Iowa) is in 10th place at 889. The Chargers’ best showing at nationals came in 2011, when they finished 14th.

“The greens today were a little bit faster and the pin placements were the toughest they’ve been for the tournament,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Finishing in the top 10 might be out of reach, but we have a chance to make school history, so we still have a lot to play for.”

Sophomore Cody Reiber shot a 4-over-par 76 and is at 5 over for the tournament, which is good for a tie for 28th in the individual standings. Sophomore Nick Gustafson rebounded from back-to-back rounds in the 80s by posting a 75 for the Chargers’ best score of the day. His three-round total of 239 has him tied for 103rd overall.

Sophomore Chad Hatch (232, T-79th) carded and 80 and sophomore Mark Dockstader (242, T-105th) came in with an 81 for the Chargers. Freshman Joey Juergens (232, T-79th) added an 82 that didn’t count toward Sandburg’s team score.

“We’ve got nothing to lose tomorrow,” Twaddle said. “Hopefully our guys will come out relaxed and we’ll be able to finish on a high note.”
