Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition Seeking Volunteer Tutors

April 2, 2013
GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition is seeking volunteer tutors. Basic volunteer training sessions will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. April 7, 14 and 21 in Room 103 of George Davis Hall on the campus of Knox College.

Basic training is 16 hours. Twelve hours are completed in class, and the remaining four hours are individual and depend on the interest of the volunteer. Training, tutoring books and materials are free. Those who can’t attend the entire training may complete it at other sessions scheduled throughout the year, and it also is possible to complete 12 hours of training online.

This training is transferable to most other literacy programs. Completion of the training and volunteer tutoring are excellent credentials to add to job and school applications. After attending the training sessions and participating in four hours of observation/tutoring, volunteers will complete the 16 hours of literacy tutor training required by the State of Illinois Literacy Office and also earn one continuing education credit from Sandburg.

The needs of students range from lack of reading skills to more specific needs such as passing the GED test or job-related tests. Tutors for basic math and English as a Second Language also are needed. Once trained, volunteers typically meet for about an hour once a week at a public site and can tutor students one-on-one, in small groups or in classrooms and also assist with specific projects and events.

The Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition serves those who are 17 and older, not in public school and function below a ninth-grade level. The coalition is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy Worldwide and receives funding from the Illinois Secretary of State, the Illinois Community College Board, United Way of Knox County and donations from individuals and local organizations.

Registration is required. To register or for more information, contact Karen Avalos, literacy project coordinator, at kavalos@sandburg.edu or Carlos Duncan, Adult Learning Center outreach worker, at 309.344.1631.
