SOUTH HOLLAND—Sophomore Jesse Bathelt’s golden goal with less than 3 minutes left in double overtime lifted the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team to a 3-2 comeback victory Wednesday over South Suburban in the first round of the Region IV tournament.

The Chargers (14-4-0), who have won eight of their last nine matches, rallied despite playing a man down at the end of regulation and for the duration of the overtime periods. Sandburg advances to play at DuPage at noon Saturday in a quarterfinal match.

With penalty kicks looming, freshman Jake Kirchoff-Sleet sent a cross in front of the South Suburban goal, and Bathelt hammered it home from the far post to send the Chargers on to the next round.

“It was a sweet, sweet victory,” Sandburg interim coach Kokou Kaho said. “Our guys never gave up, and it turned into a great win for us. We thought we were going to penalty kicks, but Jake and Jesse made a big play at a big moment.”

The game was scoreless until Sandburg freshman converted off an assist from sophomore Manny Gonzalez in the 50th minute. The Bulldogs then scored back-to-back goals in a five-minute span to take a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute, but Gonzalez got the equalizer off a pass from freshman Robert Hamrick in the 76th minute.

Gonzalez was sent off with a red card late in regulation, leaving the Chargers down a man for the remainder of the contest, but Bathelt rendered it moot with his game-winning goal.
