CRYSTAL LAKE—Kevin Aka scored twice as the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team picked up its second straight victory with a 2-0 win at McHenry County on Saturday in the Chargers’ conference opener.
After a scoreless first half, Aka got the Chargers (2-1, 1-0) on the board in the 55th minute off an assist from freshman Manfred Gonzalez. Aka put Sandburg up 2-0 when he scored off a feed from sophomore Mario Romero.
“I want to single out Manfred, who was our MVP in the midfield, and Kevin for putting away two solid goals,” Chargers coach Allen Eskridge said.
Freshman goalkeeper Collin Jeffcoat made 12 saves to pick up his first career shutout behind a defense led by sophomore Connor Benson, freshman Matt Connors, freshman David Flores and freshman John Fletcher Molchin.
“McHenry got a lot of shots off but none uncontested,” Eskridge said. “Collin had two huge saves at the beginning of the second half before we scored that helped turn the game around for us.”
Sandburg plays its next four games at home, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday against Malcolm X at the Knox County YMCA.
