Excellence, Collaboration, Integrity, Respect.

General Education Development classes are for adults who have not completed high school. Students prepare to take the GED exam to earn a High School Equivalency Certificate. Each spring graduates are invited to participate in a GED graduation ceremony at Carl Sandburg College.
Pre-GED classes provide instruction to adults in basic reading, math, and writing as well as skills needed in everyday life. Adults who need basic literacy skills enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes. Students progress at an individual pace.
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are for students whose native language is not English. Students from all over the world learn spoken and written English skills as well as practical life skills. Citizenship instruction is also available. This class is nonacademic and does not qualify for student visa.
Computer Literacy Classes are self-paced computer basics and writing skills projects including: Introduction to Microsoft XP, Microsoft Word, editing digital pictures, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Excel and creating business spreadsheets.
Literacy Tutoring is available through the Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition. Trained literacy volunteers work with adult students who want to improve basic reading, writing, math and English as a Second Language. Tutoring instruction is learner-centered. Tutors and students work either one-on-one or in small groups. Volunteer tutors participate in a training program before they are placed with students. Continual support is available for both tutors and students through support groups, special events, book clubs and workshops. Training, services and materials are provided at no charge.
Family Literacy is available through the Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition and includes five components: parent education (GED and English as a Second Language), child education, parenting education, parent and child together activities (PACT), and library involvement. Services provided at no charge.
All services are offered at no charge to eligible students.
Programs are held throughout the Carl Sandburg College district. Call to find convenient times and locations:
